Why do I pay for waste?

Everyone in the Czech Republic has to pay for municipal waste, starting from a newborn. Individual municipalities decide how, where and how much to pay.

As a foreigner, you are required to register for municipal waste collection payments as soon as possible directly at the city office. Payments for waste collection made to us (VITOM Správa) are not considered as fulfilling this obligation. Since you are officially registered as foreigners in the Czech Republic, failure to meet this requirement can result in significant fines.

However, once you fulfill your obligation and provide us with confirmation that you are paying for waste collection at your registered address, we will issue you a new registration document without the waste collection fee. It is not necessary for you to pay for waste collection twice. This only happens in rare cases when a homeowners' association (SVJ) arranges a special waste collection service, such as for sorted waste or an increased number of bins beyond what is allocated for the building.

You can use the following instructions to register for waste collection fees:

Residential properties can request special bins for sorted waste themselves. They then apportion the charges to the residents of the building. If you have a Sorted Waste Collection item on your bill, you probably have these bins right in your home. This item remains on your record sheet even if you reapply for waste collection charges for that address. Sorted waste bins are not part of the standard municipal waste collection.
